A Titanic Party!

Titanic could/should replace the word epic. Epic is overused even though it is a great word and used to describe something specific, people really overuse it when they really just want to say awesome. To take it to the next level, maybe we can use the word titanic.

That’s really a side note and has nothing to do with this post.

This past Saturday, April 14th, 2012, was the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, a historical event my nephew is obsessed with. He knows weird facts, reads every book, watches every show about the great boat. So, it came into my head that we should have a Titanic-themed dinner.

We ate food that was served at the last meal. We had a cake with blue frosting, marshmallow iceberg and a sinking ship in the middle. We all wore hats. We had waves decorating the buffet, place cards and books about Titanic all around. It was a fun and special way to celebrate a part of history and something I hope my nephew will not soon forget.

This post is really about family.

The Sir, Mrs. and Sister

When God was passing out families, he somehow decided to bless me with one that would value me, lift me up, nurture me, indulge me, protect me, support me, make me laugh, laugh with me, laugh at me and just love me. I just mentioned to my Mom that we should have a Titanic party for my nephew and the whole family made it happen. We bought decorations and my sister made the cake. My dad barbequed filet, mom roasted asparagus and potatoes and I was the photographer. When families get together, it doesn’t always have to be something special, because ordinary can be good too. But spicing up the ordinary for the sake of nothing in particular is a hidden blessing waiting to be discovered. It takes a little effort, ingenuity and creativity to get through life’s doldrums. If you’ve got to do it, you might as well do it with a little bit of style. That’s my family. We might not be to coolest, but we fit each other. We all put our hats on and enjoyed one last meal on board, reading reports from that fateful evening’s disaster and musing over what it would be like to live in 1912.

Families don’t always come in the form of two parents, brothers, sisters, and children, but you know it’s family when you can completely be yourself and they love you, not just in spite of it, but because of it. So, go find your family and get them to make a “titanic” memory with you.
